The limestone cliffs were a total tease with all those fences
I planned a whole day trip to check out those huge limestone cliffs up north after seeing cool photos online. The layers in the rock were supposed to tell this ancient story, and I was pumped to spot some tiny fossils. But when I arrived, the whole base was wrapped in chain-link fencing with strict no-entry signs. I stood there for an hour, just looking at the rocks from fifty feet away. It felt pretty lame not being able to get close or even touch a sample. My boots were ready for some real exploring, but all I did was walk a paved path. Stuff like that really takes the fun out of geology for me. Next time, I'm calling ahead to see if touching is allowed.

Sometimes the backside of those formations is more open if you're up for a longer hike. Calling the ranger station first can save you a trip.

Ugh, I used to hate those fences too. Then I saw how badly erosion messed up a spot near my old place after too many people went off trail. Now I get why they have to lock it down sometimes.

Half the good rock faces in state parks have the same stupid fences now. They put them up after some idiots tried climbing at Gooseberry Falls and fell. The worst is when you drive four hours to see a cool granite shelf and it's just a viewing platform with binoculars bolted to it. Makes you want to find someone's private land and ask permission instead.
