Talking to an antique dealer flipped how I see garage sale junk

Met a guy at a flea market in Dayton who said most people buy the story not the object, and after he told me a $3 cracked vase was from a 1920s speakeasy, I started asking sellers about every weird piece and now I find way cooler stuff.

Most people buy the story not the object" sounds like the perfect excuse for overpaying for junk. Now every cracked plate at a yard sale is suddenly "grandma's secret treasure" and I'm supposed to be impressed? Next thing you know someone will tell me a rusty nail was from the Titanic and I'll hand over $50 because it has a cool backstory. I bet that antique dealer could sell you a rock he found in his driveway and call it a Viking artifact. The trick is figuring out which sellers are telling stories and which ones just want to unload their junk. But hey, if you're having fun and not spending a fortune, maybe that's all that matters anyway.

The story part is what makes the hunt fun though. My buddy paid $10 for this old rusty toolbox because the seller told him it belonged to a railroad engineer, and even if that's total nonsense, he uses it every weekend and loves it. Knowing the history, real or not, makes you actually look at the piece closer and notice details you'd skip otherwise. Sometimes the story is just a bonus on top of a cool object, not the whole reason you buy it.
