After a bad experience with chemical fumes, I switched to low-VOC varnish

I got headaches from traditional varnish fumes last week. I switched to a water-based option and the air quality improved instantly. What are your best ways to cut down on shop fumes?

Yeah, those fumes are no joke. I keep a box fan blowing air out a window anytime I'm using any finish, even the low odor stuff. Got a cheap air purifier with a carbon filter for the smaller stuff, like when I'm hand sanding. Makes a huge difference overnight.

My setup is basically the opposite of yours. Got too confident after using water-based stuff once and tried spray painting indoors last winter. Woke up with a headache that felt like a hangover and the room looked foggy for two days. Your box fan idea sounds way smarter than my plan of just holding my breath. Definitely learned my lesson the hard way.

What about trying a respirator with the right filters? I messed up once using a strong adhesive with just a window open. The fumes hit me fast, made my eyes water and gave me a bad cough. Now I keep a half-face respirator handy for any chemical stuff, even short jobs. It seals tight so no fumes get in, and I can work longer without feeling sick. That box fan method is good, but adding a mask made all the difference for me.
