Took a $200 job from a friend of a friend and it blew up in my face

I agreed to build a simple website for a local bakery, thinking it would be a quick two week project. The owner kept adding new pages and features after we agreed on the price, like a full online ordering system. After a month of extra work for no extra pay, I had to walk away and eat the cost of my time. Has anyone found a good way to handle scope creep with people you kind of know?

Did you have a written contract or was it just a verbal agreement?

My buddy did a handshake deal for a small deck build last summer, maybe two grand total. The guy showed up three weeks late but it got done fine. For stuff under five thousand, a contract feels like overkill. How much money are we even talking about here?
