I finally gave in and tried that new ceramic foam filter on our gray iron pour

Our shift lead kept pushing for it after a bad run of inclusions last month, and I was sure it was just extra cost. We ran it on the 2pm pour Tuesday, and the scrap rate dropped from 8% to under 2% on those molds. Anyone have a good source for bulk orders of the 10 ppi size?

Funny how the best fixes are often the ones you fight against at first... that stubbornness costs money. Your scrap numbers prove it's worth the hassle. Check with your refractory supplier, they usually cut a better deal on bulk than the tooling catalogs.

Yeah, I was the same way for years. Always ordered from the big catalog because it was easy, even with the high scrap rate. Switched to bulk from our refractory guy last quarter after a push from the floor lead. The consistency is just better, way fewer cracks on the edges. It felt like extra work to change the order process, but the numbers don't lie.

Sometimes the extra hassle just means swapping one set of problems for another. Bulk orders can lock you into a different kind of headache if the quality slips later.
