My great aunt's vinegar pie recipe turned into a sticky disaster last Sunday
I followed her old card exactly, using the cup of sugar and three eggs it called for. The filling just would not set after 45 minutes in the oven, staying a runny mess. I'm wondering if the recipe is missing a step, like pre-cooking the filling, or if modern eggs are just different. Has anyone else had a family recipe fail because of a hidden step we've all forgotten?

A cup of sugar with only three eggs and no thickener? That's wild. My grandma's similar recipe always had you cook the filling with a bit of flour on the stove first (the card just said "cook till thick," which I almost missed). Maybe that's the secret step.

Is it really that deep though? Some recipes just work without extra steps, even if it seems weird. Grandma's way isn't the only way to get a good pie.
