Had a plank floor in a 1920s house that took three days to level

The subfloor was so uneven from old settling that every board needed shims. I thought it would be a one day job with a sander, but the dips were too deep. Ended up using over 200 wood shims and a lot of leveling compound. Anyone else run into a floor that was way worse underneath than it looked?

My buddy tried to refinish his dining room floor last year. Looked flat until they pulled up the old rug. The joists had actually sagged like two inches in the middle. They spent a whole week just sistering in new lumber before they could even think about the floorboards. Total nightmare. He said it felt like building a house inside his house.

Sometimes a full tear-out is actually the faster fix.
