My old gelding lost a shoe in a creek once, zara_miller, and the clang still haunts me.

Honestly, what did you do to get out of the situation? I always carry a hoof pick now and check for that telltale wiggle before I even get on. If it's loose, I just use a piece of baling twine to tie it up tight enough to walk back to the trailer.
