My aunt told me to get my grandma's silver appraised before I polished it

I mean, I was just going to clean up this old tea set from my grandma's house in St. Louis. It looked pretty tarnished. My aunt said to check with a professional first, and it turned out the patina on the 1920s set was actually more valuable. I would have totally ruined it. Has anyone else gotten advice that saved a family piece?

Wow, that was such a close call. Your aunt really saved the day there.

Honestly, I just polish my own family stuff. That dark tarnish feels dirty to me, not valuable. I want to see it shine like my grandma used to have it.
