Hot take: WD-40 is not the answer to everything like people claim

I know everyone swears by WD-40 for everything from squeaky doors to loosening rusted bolts, but I found out the hard way it's not a cure-all. Last month I had a stuck pruning shear blade that was gunked up with sap and dirt, right? Everyone told me to just blast it with WD-40 and call it done. Well, I tried that and it only made the mess worse because the solvent just spread the sticky sap around instead of breaking it down. What actually worked was plain old mineral spirits and a stiff brush, then I wiped it dry and rubbed on a little 3-in-1 oil. Cost me about 8 bucks total for the bottle and it's lasted through dozens of cuts since. Why does everyone push WD-40 so hard when there's a better specific tool for the job? Has anyone else found a task where the "universal" fix failed you?

@colemiller, I feel your pain, I still love my can but it completely failed me on sticky pine sap too.

Oh great, now you're telling me my can of WD-40 isn't a miracle worker either?
