Lost $150 on a hydraulic oil filter that wasn't even the right thread pitch.
Ordered a filter from a random supply house online without double checking the specs against the manual for that old Otis in downtown Austin. Has anyone else gotten burned by assuming a standard part number would fit?

$150 is not that big of a loss to learn a lesson about triple checking parts.

Alexj, I have to respectfully disagree. For someone on a tight budget, like a student or a single parent just getting into this hobby, $150 could mean groceries for the week or gas to get to work. Learning a lesson is one thing, but not everyone has that kind of money to spare on a mistake. Maybe you could have brought up checking part numbers at the store before buying, rather than just calling it a cheap lesson.
