Fixed a 20 year old receiver yesterday just by cleaning the volume knob with Deoxit

A guy at the counter said his buddy threw out a similar one because he thought the amp was shot, and I bet a lot of people junk perfectly good gear over a $10 can of contact cleaner, has anyone else found a simple fix on something you thought was toast?

Most people don't even try the simple fix first before trashing stuff.

Oh man, that's the truth right there. I've had a handful of old receivers and amps that people were ready to toss because they'd crackle or one channel would drop out. Nine times out of ten, it's just dirty pots and switches. I bought a blown speaker off a guy for five bucks once, turned out the speaker was fine, the problem was a corroded wire connection inside the cabinet, took me five minutes to fix. @hayden720 is right that most people skip the simple fix, and it's a shame because you can save a lot of good gear with just a little patience. A can of Deoxit and a Q-tip has paid for itself dozens of times over in my book. Take this with a grain of salt, but I always tell people to at least try cleaning the controls before you give up on anything old.
