Vent: I thought smart breakers were just a gimmick until a job in Austin changed my mind

I was wiring a remodel for a client who insisted on a full smart panel, and I figured it was just a waste of money for fancy lights. Then we had a weird fault that kept tripping a standard breaker in the kitchen. The smart breaker's app showed a real-time graph of the current, and it pinpointed a specific spike every time their old fridge compressor kicked on. I swapped the fridge, and the problem vanished. Has anyone else actually found a real use for these beyond remote control?

That's a perfect example of tech moving from a cool trick to a real tool. It feels like a lot of smart home stuff gets sold on the "wow" factor, but the real win is when it quietly solves a problem you didn't even know how to find. Makes you wonder what other annoying household mysteries could be fixed with a little data. Have you looked at the other circuits to see if anything else is acting up?

Totally agree! My smart plug showed me our old fridge was cycling on every ten minutes, which explained the weird hum we'd gotten used to. It was about to die! Finding those hidden patterns is way more satisfying than just turning lights on with my voice. I'm now weirdly curious about monitoring our water heater.

Did the same thing with our dryer, @bettym89. Put a smart plug on it and found out it was running way too long. Probably saved us a huge repair bill.
