Had a homeowner in Phoenix ask me to explain every wire in his panel

Last Tuesday I swapped out a 40 year old panel in a house near downtown Phoenix. The guy watched me for two hours and asked what each breaker did. He took notes on his phone while I pointed at the old cloth wiring. I told him he should just call a guy next time, but he said he wanted to understand his own house. Has anyone else had customers that get way too into the details?

Honestly I think that kind of homeowner is a keeper. Had a guy in Tempe last year who wanted to know everything about his 60 amp subpanel in the garage. Walked him through the whole thing for like an hour while he took notes on a notepad. Dude ended up buying me lunch and became a regular customer. Better than the ones who just stare at their phone the whole time.

Flipped my lid when I read about that napkin sketch! I had a guy in Scottsdale once pull out a college-ruled notebook and ask me to diagram how his whole house electrical ties into the main. He asked about bonding jumpers and everything. I spent an hour on that driveway drawing it out with a sharpie. He tipped me $50 and said he was framing the napkin. I still can't believe people like that exist!

Man, those kinds of homeowners are rare. I had a guy up in Flagstaff once who wanted me to explain the whole grounding system (like rods, bond wires, the works) while he sketched it on a napkin. He even paid me extra for the time!
