TIL I was washing my cast iron skillet all wrong for years

Honestly, I used to scrub my pan with soap and a steel wool pad every time I cooked bacon. Then my buddy Dave at the farmers market told me to just use hot water and a chainmail scrubber instead. He pointed out the black stuff on my paper towel after drying was actually good seasoning I was stripping off. Has anyone else had a lightbulb moment about kitchen gear they thought they knew?

...and then I spent six months wondering why my eggs kept sticking like crazy. Turns out I was basically sanding down the pan every time I cleaned it. Now I just wipe it out with a paper towel and a little salt, and that old Lodge is slicker than my mom's nonstick ever was.
