Heard a neighbor say they just throw a whole chicken in with no liquid

They said it always turns out fine, but that's a great way to end up with a dry, tough bird. I always add at least a cup of broth or water to the bottom of my crock. Has anyone else had a bad result from skipping liquid entirely?

My aunt tried that once and we ended up with chicken jerky.

Yeah @reed.ray, that's the classic mistake. Gotta keep the temp super low, like 160 tops, and check it every hour. My buddy left his in for six hours once and we could've used it to fix a shoe.
