inRemember when hostels just had a book exchange? Now the one in Lisbon had a free walking tour and a community dinner for 5 euros.
Got a favorite walking tour from one?

inMy grandma's famous pie crust recipe failed me at a big family picnic
My aunt's biscuit recipe from the 70s is like that. She wrote "shortening" but the stuff in the blue can today is totally different. I have to use half butter and half of the modern shortening or they're just greasy rocks. It's frustrating because you feel like you're messing up a memory.

inUsed a zip tie to fix a stripped seatpost clamp on a kid's bike today, worked like a charm
Yeah, that'll hold for a while. Just keep an eye on it and replace it with a proper clamp when you can.

inSerious question, is a rock hammer always the right tool for the job?
Oh man, that chisel trick is a game changer. I spent a whole season in Wyoming trying to get clean slabs of sandstone with just a rock hammer, making a total mess. A visiting geologist finally handed me a brick bolster, basically a wide chisel, and it was like magic. My pack is heavier now, but my samples aren't just rubble anymore.

inA spreader bar cable snapped on me last month during a lift
Damn, that's a scary sound to hear on a job. Glad you caught it and got it down safe. We had a 1/2 inch wire rope choker snap on a steel beam lift last year, same deal with hidden broken wires inside a bend. My routine now is a real slow, hands-on check, feeling for any pricks or flat spots, especially on old gear.
