Appreciation post: The estate sale where I found a 1960s home repair manual
I went to this random estate sale in Cincinnati last Saturday, just scoping out the usual junk. On a shelf in the garage, there was this beat up book from 1963 called 'The Handyman's Complete Guide' with this awesome woodgrain cover. The guy running the sale said it came from an old contractor's house who passed away. I paid $2 for it and spent that night reading through the whole thing. It's got these wild illustrations for fixing boilers and wiring old fuse boxes, stuff you never see in modern how-to books. The cover alone has this embossed toolbox graphic that looks like it belongs in a midcentury diner. Made me realize I should hit up estate sales in older neighborhoods more often instead of just thrift stores. Has anyone else found a surprisingly useful book at an estate sale instead of a regular shop?

Oh man, that reminds me of the time I grabbed a 1950s car repair manual at a barn sale thinking it'd be full of handy tips, only to find half the diagrams showing how to adjust your carburetor with a screwdriver and a prayer! That aluminum wiring warning from your 1970s book sounds familiar, I swear those old books never met a fire hazard they didn't like.

Man, that woodgrain cover alone sounds worth the $2. But that part about the old boiler and fuse box illustrations caught my eye. Did the book actually have any step-by-step guides for stuff that's still safe to try today, or was it more of a historical time capsule? I ask because I found a 1970s electrical manual once that had some real sketchy advice about aluminum wiring. The stuff that would burn your house down if you followed it nowadays. Curious if your 1963 book walked that line between useful knowledge and outdated danger.
