I keep seeing people call 1970s paperbacks 'first editions' when they're really just early printings

Found a dog-eared copy of 'The Left Hand of Darkness' at a garage sale in Akron for 50 cents, and the seller swore it was a first edition because the copyright page said 1969... but the price on the dust jacket was $8.95, which means it's a later printing from the 80s. Anyone else notice thrift store vendors slapping a high price on anything old just because it's old?

Wait, didn't I pay $20 for a "rare" copy of 'The Princess Bride' once?

Oh come on, you know that's how they get you. They slap a "rare" sticker on anything with a faded cover and suddenly everyone's fighting over it. What's next, a "limited edition" grocery list?
