Just realized self-leveling compound is actually worth it on big floors

An old timer named Pete at the supply house in Phoenix told me to stop fighting with patching compound on a 2,000 square foot job. He was right - saved me 6 hours of sanding and the floor came out dead flat. Anyone else stubborn about using the right base material and later regretted it?

Held out using Ardex Feather Finish on a job because I was too cheap to spring for the self leveler. Figured I could skim coat the whole thing. Got about 400 square feet in before I realized I'd be sanding for WEEKS. What made you finally cave and buy the right bag? Was it a specific spot you kept fighting with or just your back giving out?

Am I the only one who spent years mixing up thin-set just to avoid buying a bag of the right stuff? Learned that lesson the hard way after a 12-hour sanding session.
