Had to pick between mesh tape and paper tape on a ceiling repair yesterday

I was fixing a 4-foot crack in a popcorn ceiling at a house in Oak Park. Paper tape is my go-to for flats but I knew mesh would be faster and I was running late. Went with mesh and the mud bubbled up like crazy because I didn't pre-fill the gap. Spent an extra 20 minutes sanding it flat. Any of you guys had mesh fail on a ceiling like that?

Well, I'll admit it took me a while to find the studs and I may have dropped a few screws down the drywall gap. If you ever hear a mysterious rattle in my living room, that's probably one of them. At least it hides the popcorn ceiling I never got around to scraping off.
