Tried patching drywall with spackle instead of joint compound last weekend
Figured it'd save me a trip to the store, but it crumbled out after two days and now I've got a bigger hole to fix. Has anyone else made this mistake on a ceiling patch?

Saw this on a DIY blog once. They said spackle is for nail holes, not for patching big areas. It's designed to shrink and crack under stress. Joint compound has binders that hold up better on ceilings.

Yeah I remember reading something similar on a home improvement forum. This guy who used to drywall for like 20 years said spackle is basically just for tiny dings and scratches, not for anything bigger than a quarter. Joint compound has that glue in it that keeps it from crumbling when it dries, especially on a ceiling where gravity is working against you. Spackle will just crack and fall out after a few months in a big patch.
