Ran the numbers on old single pane windows vs new double panes

My December gas bill was $230 so I looked up the R value difference and the old panes were losing about 40% more heat than I guessed. Has anyone else run into a crazy difference like that after checking their own utility bills?

Whoa, that December bill must have stung. I've been down a similar rabbit hole with my place, and it's shocking how much those old single panes just bleed heat. You start thinking 'oh it's just windows' and then you see the math and realize they're basically open holes in the wall. It's one of those things where the numbers don't lie, but man, it hurts to see it on paper.

bleed heat" is such a good way to put it. I read somewhere that old single panes have almost the same R value as a piece of cardboard, which honestly made me feel a little better about my own bills.
