Tuesday morning, 6:15am. Tried to open the garage to leave for work. Heard a loud BANG. Like a gunshot. The spring just snapped clean in two. I thought oh man this is gonna cost hundreds. Looked up how to replace it myself. Watched a few videos, got the right springs at Home Depot for $45. But man, those springs are scary. One wrong move and they can hurt you bad. Took me 3 hours with a helper. Had to buy special winding bars. Got it done but I'm not sure I'd do it again. Anyone else replaced a garage spring and been nervous the whole time?
That loud BANG had me convinced someone fired a gun in my driveway too. I watched the same videos and thought I was ready, but halfway through winding that spring I was pretty sure I'd accidentally launch myself through the ceiling. Let's just say I'm now on a first-name basis with my local garage door guy and I'll happily pay him next time.
