Pro tip: I compared a $15 plastic spackle knife to a $40 metal one for my drywall patch, and the difference was huge.

Funny how tools can be such a personal thing. My old landlord swore by the plastic kind for small fixes, much like hayden720 said. But I remember trying to smooth a bigger patch with one and it just flexed too much, leaving ridges. Ended up borrowing a metal knife from a neighbor and it was way easier to get a flat finish. Your mileage may vary, but for anything bigger than a nail hole, I'd grab the stiffer blade now.

My plastic one worked fine for years.
