I finally switched from nails to a framing nailer for my deck rebuild

Used to spend whole weekends hammering 16d nails into pressure treated lumber by hand. Got sick of bent nails and sore elbows after the third row of joists on my back deck in Cleveland last summer. Borrowed my brother's nailer and finished the whole thing in 4 hours instead of 2 days. Is the air compressor setup worth the money for a one time job or should you just rent the gun?

Nah, I was totally team hammer forever. Told myself it was more "authentic" or whatever. Then I borrowed a buddy's setup for my patio cover and yeah... I was a complete idiot. Never going back.

My buddy was in the exact same spot with his deck up in Lakewood last year. He ended up buying a cheap pancake compressor and the cheapest framing nailer at Home Depot and honestly it worked totally fine for his one deck and a few fence repairs later. Your mileage may vary on that but the rental cost at our local place was like 60 bucks a day and he figured for a little more he just owned the stuff. I mean you gotta think about nailing speed too, not having to stop and reload every 5 seconds makes a huge difference when you're in the zone. Also take this with a grain of salt but if you think you might ever build a shed or a fence down the road, owning is way more satisfying than rushing through a weekend rental window.
