Actually, brushing dry grounds straight onto dry paper won't work either, they'll just fall right off. You need a little moisture to get the color to stick, but not so much it turns to soup. Next time try mixing like a teaspoon of coffee with a couple drops of water to make a paste and paint it on with a brush.

Ugh that really stinks, I feel your pain on this one. I tried doing the same thing with instant coffee last month and it was such a watery disaster, took forever to clean up. Next time I think I'll just stick to brushing the grounds straight onto dry paper and see if that works any better.
