The $5 trick that saved my work day in Bangkok
I was stuck in a cafe with terrible wifi (like, 2 Mbps download bad) and a deadline in 2 hours. My usual mobile hotspot was useless too. On a total whim, I bought a local prepaid SIM card from a 7-Eleven for about 150 baht, which is like $5. I popped it into my old phone, turned on the hotspot, and suddenly had a solid 25 Mbps connection. It was way faster and more reliable than hunting for another cafe. Has anyone else found that a cheap local data SIM is the real backup plan?

My backup plan is just crying in the bathroom.

That's not a backup plan, that's the main event. Gotta have a real plan b for after the cry.

Have you tried keeping a spare old phone just for situations like this? I always carry an unlocked backup with a local SIM ready to go, saves me every time in places with spotty wifi.
