My friend told me to only use three layers for a portrait and it looked flat
He swore by it, said more layers just make things messy. So I tried it on a piece for a local show. The face had zero depth, looked like a sticker. Showed it to him and he just shrugged. Ended up adding about fifteen more layers over the weekend to fix it. Anyone else get art advice that sounded good but was totally off?

Honestly, your friend's three-layer rule is a solid starting point for clean work.

Totally agree... it's like the bare minimum for not looking messy. I've found adding a fourth layer for texture makes things look way more finished though.
