Appreciation post: My 2004 Rio Karma finally gave up after 19 years
I've been nursing that old MP3 player since college, replacing the battery twice with random eBay packs that somehow matched. Last week the click wheel just stopped responding, and I wasted about 6 hours trying to find a Linux driver that still works with it. Anyone else keep a dead device around for sentimental value even when it's totally useless now?

Funny how we hold onto tech long past its prime but upgrade our phones every two years without blinking. That Rio probably saw more memories than any smartphone ever will. Guess some things are just worth the extra drawer space.

Extra drawer space" is a nice way to put it, but I think it's deeper than that. That Rio is a time capsule, and every scratch on it is a memory you can't get from a cloud backup. @troy_gibson43, you're right about the phone cycle, but at least a dead MP3 player doesn't spy on you or force you to update its software every week.
