That 1990s mall stat that completely flipped my thinking
Was reading about the Villa Linda Mall in New Mexico and found out it had 90% occupancy right up until the year it closed in 2018. Always thought malls died because they were half empty first, but that one fact made me realize anchor store departures can kill a place even when the little shops are still hanging on. Anyone else run into a closing stat that surprised them like that?

That theme of a single domino taking down the whole chain shows up everywhere now.

My local Sears closed in 2019 and the whole mall went from packed to a ghost town in less than 3 months. The little shops were still open but nobody wanted to walk past empty anchor stores to get to them. Reminds me of how one empty apartment in my building made three other tenants leave because they thought the place was going downhill. One weak link makes people question everything.
