My answering machine light blinked for 3 years before I realized I had the volume off

Last Tuesday I finally picked up the landline to dial my mom and heard that weird static hum, then it hit me that all those saved messages from 2021 were just sitting there silent because I'd turned the volume knob down when the dog barked at a delivery guy, has anyone else missed entire voicemail eras from a dumb switch?

Different take here. That static hum and the blinking light were the real message. The recordings from 2021, they are from 2021. Life moved on for everyone in that time. Your mom knows you love her because you called her on Tuesday. Those missed voices, you already lived through the part that mattered. The machine did you a favor by making you forget about the noise, not the people.
