That $1 paperback of East of Eden had a quote from Genesis about Cain and Abel, and reading it before chapter one instead of after finishing changed how I saw Cal the whole way through, kind of like getting the punchline before the joke and still laughing, which makes me wonder if anyone else has a book where the front quote ended up mattering more than the story itself.
The epigraph in Blood Meridian does more work than half the chapters, or at least it sets the dread before you even meet the judge. Reading it cold first is like the book handing you a warning you don't understand yet. Then 200 pages in it clicks and you feel dumb for not getting it sooner.
