Just realized my bank's two-factor texts are a security weak point

Visited a coffee shop in Austin last week and watched a stranger read someone's verification code over their shoulder. They typed it into their own phone in seconds. I always thought 2FA was bulletproof, but those SMS codes are just too exposed in public spaces. Am I overthinking this, or has anyone else found a better alternative like an authenticator app they actually stick with?

Man that would freak me out too. Those texts pop up right on your lock screen half the time so anyone nearby can just grab it. You're not overthinking it at all.
