Gave up my VPN for a week on her advice, huge mistake in Denver

My coworker in IT insisted my work from home setup didn't need a VPN since I only check email and spreadsheets, so I turned it off last Tuesday and felt fine for two days. Then my router logs showed three brute force attempts on my home IP from a random server in Russia by Thursday morning, and she admitted she never runs her own traffic without one. Anyone else had a supposedly tech savvy friend give them bad security advice that they actually followed for a while?
