Hot take: I've hit 90 days without a single chargeback since I started reading the card reader screen out loud to customers
I work the register at a hardware store in Boise and about three months ago I started saying the total out loud while I point at the screen, then saying it again while I point at the pin pad. Sounds silly but our chargebacks went from 4 or 5 a month to zero, and I know it's working because our manager pulled the numbers last Tuesday and asked what I changed. Turns out most disputes happen when people tap without ever looking at what they're paying, so the second look catches it before they walk out. My trick is pausing for one extra second after I say the number, even when there's a line. Any other cashiers do the same thing, or is there a better way to get folks to actually check the total?
Man, I gotta push back on this a little. Chargebacks are mostly people lying about not getting what they paid for, not folks spacing out at the pin pad, so reading numbers out loud probably isn't why your count hit zero. Three months is a short window too, that could just be a quiet stretch at the store. If it makes you feel better saying the total twice, knock yourself out, but I wouldn't call it a fix for chargebacks.
