Debate: Should you call out a rude customer in front of everyone or just take it?

Last week a woman at the checkout in Walmart told me I was useless because the price check took 2 minutes, and the guy behind her said 'ma'am, she's doing her best' - should I have thanked him or stayed out of it completely?

So what I've learned is that letting the customer be rude without saying anything just makes it worse for the next person. A while back I had a lady screaming at me over a coupon issue and this older man just quietly said "hey, take it easy on her" and it totally changed the vibe. I think stepping in like that is brave and really helpful because it shows the rude person that other people see what's happening. The Walmart guy did a good thing by speaking up, you probably should have thanked him. Maybe it's just me but I think customers who act like that need to be reminded that we're all human.

That Walmart guy probably saved me from crying in the cereal aisle.
