Why does everyone treat a 40 subscriber channel like it's a real business

Honestly I watched a guy in my Discord turn down a $60 Patreon pledge from a fan in Ohio because he wanted to wait until he hit 1,000 subs and it felt more official. That fan unsubbed two weeks later, and I still think about it whenever someone says they need a bigger audience first.
