I thought dropping my Patreon for a $5 Discord sub was a mistake, and then last month happened

I moved my 180 paying fans off Patreon and onto a plain Discord with a $5 role, mostly because Patreon was taking a cut and I was tired of the tiers. I figured I'd lose half of them, but I kept 171 and my payout went up about $60 a month since there's no platform fee. Anyone else made this jump and regretted it later, or did the churn stay low for you too?

What made you pick the $5 price point instead of something like $3 or $7? The reason I ask is that most people who bail on Patreon lose way more than 9 fans, so something about your setup must have kept them locked in. Was it the fact that Discord was already where your community lived, or did you sweeten the deal with perks that only make sense in a server? I'm curious if the churn stayed low because of price, platform, or just because your crowd was already loyal before the move. And what's your plan if Discord ever changes their rules on paid roles?

Ha, this is my exact wheelhouse. I ran a paid Discord for about two years and the $5 spot really is the sweet spot because it's low enough that people forget it's on their card but high enough that they feel like they're actually paying for something. The real trick was making the perks things you can only do in a server, like custom roles, early access to drops, and private voice hangs, so leaving meant losing access to people, not just content. That's why churn stays low, it's way harder to walk away from a friend group than from a feed. My backup plan was always simple: keep a plain email list and move everyone to a cheap self-hosted or forum setup if Discord ever killed paid roles, since the community matters more than the platform.
