My writing group argued for a month over whether to kill off the main character's dog in chapter 3.
I chose to keep the dog alive, which forced me to completely rewrite the novel's middle act around a new source of conflict, and honestly, I'm still not sure if it was the right call for the story's emotional weight.

Honestly, the dog living probably gave you a better, more original plot anyway.

Oh man, the dog living is the real twist. Now the main character has to deal with vet bills and chewed-up shoes.
