Watched a 30 year operator show me up with a hand crank on a Grove last month

I was running a hydraulic luffer on a high rise in Austin, feeling pretty good about my speed, then this older guy comes by and sets his load perfectly with a manual boom for a job across the street. Has anyone else seen that kind of old school skill still paying off in the field?

Grove hand cranks are for the boom angle, not the load line. He had a separate winch for that. Still impressive to see an old timer work a manual setup without overshooting though. They just know the sweet spots on those friction brakes.

Get a guy who's spent enough years feathering those old friction brakes and he can set a load down on a dime without even thinking about it. It's all feel and sound with those rigs, not something you can learn from a manual.
