Can we talk about spotting for a tower crane in tight city streets?

Had a 40-ton pick in downtown Seattle last Tuesday where my spotter started using hand signals from the opposite sidewalk instead of yelling, and it cut our setup time by half. Anyone have other tricks for congested urban sites?

Man, I always thought spotters yelling was just part of the deal. Seeing that hand signal trick work so well totally changed my mind.

Hand signals are a game changer for noise. We used color-coded hard hats on a Boston job, red for the spotter and yellow for the crane op, so they could pick each other out of a crowd instantly. Pre-planning the pick path with the spotter over coffee before shift start saved us from last-minute pointing and confusion. Having a clear "stop everything" signal, like crossing your arms into an X, prevented a close call with some scaffolding.
