I thought Smash Bros was the king of couch nights until a 4 player Mario Party night in my garage in Tucson last month changed my whole setup
For 6 years I ran fight nights in my garage every Friday. Two people on the sticks, everyone else watching and yelling. I swore nothing beat it. Then my buddy Marcus brought Mario Party 4 over because his kid outgrew it. 4 of us on one screen, no split, everyone doing something at once. Nobody sat out. Nobody stared at their phone between rounds. We played 3 hours and I laughed harder than any bracket night in years. Now I have a rule, if a game makes even one person wait their turn, it stays on the shelf. The tricky part is picking games that keep 4 people busy without total chaos. What 4 player games actually keep everyone in it at your house? I need a short list before next Friday.
See I can't fully get behind that rule because the turn waiting is kind of the whole fun sometimes. Half the trash talk in our garage comes from watching somebody else choke on their turn, and if everyone is doing their own thing at the same time then nobody is really watching anybody. We ran Mario Party nights too and yeah they were a blast but they turn into pure noise after an hour, everybody yelling over each other, and the actual skill part goes out the window. Smash still wins for us because the pressure of having four people watching you lose is what makes it feel like a real event. That said if you want stuff where nobody sits, try Towerfall or Duck Game, they keep everybody moving without turning into a slot machine.
