My aunt said to use a dab of toothpaste on a client's zit before makeup, worst idea ever

So my aunt, who is not a pro but thinks she knows everything, told me this 'trick' for a quick fix on a breakout before foundation. Had a client come in for her engagement photos last month, super stressed about a huge spot on her chin. In a panic, I remembered the toothpaste thing and put a tiny bit on. Big mistake. It dried out way too fast, turned all flaky and white, and when I tried to blend concealer over it, it looked like a crusty patch of drywall. The client was not happy, obviously. I had to start her whole base over after washing it off. Has anyone else gotten truly terrible advice from a non-pro that you actually tried?

My cousin swore by the aspirin mask trick for calming redness. She said to crush a few pills with water into a paste. Tried it once and it left tiny gritty bits all over my sink that wouldn't wash down. The actual paste burned a little and did nothing for my skin. It just felt like a weird science project. That whole household remedy scene is full of traps for people who don't know better.

My buddy's girlfriend convinced him that lemon juice would lighten some dark spots on his shoulders. He ended up with these awful, stinging red patches that looked way worse than the original spots. Took over a week for the irritation to calm down. She swore by it from some blog, but it just wrecked his skin for a bit. Some of these kitchen cabinet fixes are straight up harmful.
