Hot take: the scheduler who said 'the board lies to everyone' changed how I run my jobs
I was at a CMAA meetup in Denver a few months back and a scheduler with 20 years on big hospital jobs said something I keep thinking about. She said the CPM schedule is not a plan, it is a story you tell to get paid, and the real plan lives in the daily reports. I went back and pulled 3 weeks of dailies on a school addition and the float on our critical path was basically fake, one crew was 9 days behind on punch list items. Now I have my supers write a two line reality check at the bottom of every report, what actually moved and what did not. We caught a steel delivery slip 4 days early on the next job off that alone. Curious if anyone else treats the schedule as a sales doc and the dailies as the truth, or am I way off here?
You ever try color coding the dailies against the baseline so the drift jumps out at you? Do that and the story the schedule tells stops matching what your supers are seeing on the ground real quick.
