Warning: I started using a cheap USB microscope for board inspection and it's a total game changer.
I was struggling to spot a cracked capacitor on a laptop motherboard from a local school district. Borrowed a $60 model from a friend, and the clarity made the fault obvious in seconds. What other affordable tools have you guys found that punch way above their weight?

Check out those cheap thermal cameras that plug into your phone. I got one for like a hundred bucks and it's wild for finding hot components or bad connections without even touching the board. Spotted a failing voltage regulator on a power supply that just felt warm to the touch, but the camera showed one specific chip was way hotter than the rest. Total lifesaver for quick diagnostics. What model USB scope did your friend have, was it one of those ones with the stand?

Total lifesaver" feels like a stretch for those phone thermal cams. The cheap ones have such low resolution that a hot spot just looks like a blurry blob. How do you tell the difference between a hot chip and a warm capacitor right next to it? I tried one on a crowded motherboard and it just showed a big warm area, no real detail. It points you in a general direction, but you still need to poke around with a meter or your finger to find the exact part.
