Old IT guy told me to always use thermal paste even on new CPUs. He was dead right.

My buddy Mike built his first PC last year and didn't use thermal paste because the stock cooler "looked like it had some." Three months later his Ryzen was hitting 95C just browsing Chrome. He finally opened it up and the paste had dried into basically dust. New tube of Arctic Silver cost him like eight bucks and dropped temps by 20 degrees. He still talks about it.

Ha, yeah that's a classic mistake. I gotta be honest @faith_price7, I used to think thermal paste was kind of overhyped. Like, I figured if the stock cooler came with a pad or something it must be fine. But hearing about Mike's rig hitting 95C just browsing Chrome is insane. That definitely changed my mind. A few bucks for paste is the cheapest insurance you can buy for a build, your mileage may vary but I'd never skip it again.
