Why does nobody talk about the old way of checking your bailout bottle?

I used to just give it a quick glance and a tug on the hose. After a close call in 30 feet of murky water near Galveston, I started doing a full pressure check and valve function test before every single dive. What's your pre-dive bottle check look like now?

Man, that's a scary story. Honestly, my big change was adding a sniff check. I had a tank filled at a shop that must've had a bad compressor, got a face full of oily, burnt air right at the surface. Now I always crack the valve open just for a second and take a quick smell before I even hook it up. That, plus the full pressure check. That bad air will ruin your whole dive before it even starts.

Did it make you feel sick right away?
