Shoutout to the old hand in Corpus Christi who saw me fighting my umbilical and said 'kid, you're fighting the current, not working with it'.

I was on a hull cleaning job for a week, wasting air and energy by trying to muscle through instead of letting the water flow help position me.

Totally get that. Saw the same thing when I was learning to surf, just exhausting myself trying to fight every wave. @nina_ramirez is right, it's everywhere. I catch myself doing it in conversations, pushing my point too hard instead of just listening. My dad used to say you can't push a rope, you have to lead it. Same idea. That old timer saved you a lot of future frustration.

My uncle told me something similar when I was learning to paddleboard, said I looked like I was fighting the ocean itself. That idea of working with the flow, not against it, shows up everywhere, like trying to force a project at work instead of just following the natural steps. I see people do it with traffic too, constantly switching lanes aggressively and actually getting home slower. That old guy gave you some free wisdom that applies way beyond the water.
