My comms went dead at 80 feet on a bridge inspection job in Tampa.

I was checking a piling and my umbilical got pinched by a piece of rebar I didn't see. I gave the emergency pull signal on my line and my tender felt it right away. What's your backup plan when the headset fails?

Yeah, that's a solid move like @the_iris said. Do you practice your hand signals often enough that they're automatic under stress? Muscle memory is the real backup when the tech fails.

Honestly used to think carrying extra gear was overkill until a buddy's radio died mid-climb. Watching him rely on pure hand signal memory was a real eye-opener. Now I drill those signals every week just like it's a fire drill. That muscle memory thing is no joke when you actually need it.

Lost comms once, so I always carry a backup slate now.
